Samsung 9100 vs Crucial T705 Benchmark Comparison

2 min readMar 18, 2025

Today, Samsung released their new PICIe Generation 5.0 high speed NVMe M.2. SSD. Before this launch, Crucial T705 owned the highest speeds for PCIe 5. Here is the difference and it looks like the Samsung 9100 outperforms Crucial T705.

Crucial T705 2TB

Samsung 9100 2TB

Pricing:

-Samsung 9100 1TB $199.99
-Samsung 9100 2TB $299.99
-Samsung 9100 4TB $549.99

  • Crucial T705 1TB $159.99
    -Crucial T705 2TB $239.99
    -Crucial T705 4TB $389.99

In my opinion, the Samsung 9100 is worth getting for your main C drive that you have Windows installed on. It might be worth it to have a Crucial T705 4TB as a spare drive to keep files on. That price difference is significant. I mostly keep most of my files on a spare drive so when I reset my computer to factory settings every 6–9 months, I don’t actually lose the data.

Worth noting:

  • Backwards Compatibility: PCIe 5.0 is indeed backwards compatible with previous generations. This means you can use a PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD, such as the Samsung 990 Pro, in a PCIe 5.0 motherboard and achieve the SSD’s maximum designed speeds.
  • Performance on Older Motherboards: If you use a PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD in a PCIe 4.0 motherboard, the SSD will operate at the motherboard’s PCIe 4.0 speeds. The Samsung 9100 Pro, for example, offers sequential read speeds up to 14,800 MB/s and write speeds up to 13,400 MB/s on a PCIe 5.0 interface. However, when used in a PCIe 4.0 motherboard, these speeds would be limited to the maximum bandwidth of PCIe 4.0, typically up to 7,800 MB/s.
  • Motherboard Compatibility: Before upgrading to a PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD, ensure your motherboard supports PCIe 5.0 to fully utilize the SSD’s capabilities.

Additionally, it’s important to note that real-world performance differences between PCIe 4.0 and PCIe 5.0 SSDs may not be significant for everyday tasks. Some tests have shown only slight improvements in loading times between different PCIe generations.

In summary, while PCIe 5.0 SSDs offer higher theoretical speeds, the practical benefits depend on your specific use case and whether your system supports PCIe 5.0.
